Ruth Adams Allen Knowles of Clinton, died at Southwood Rehabilitation Center in Clinton on Sunday, July 22, 2018.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Grandview Memorial Garden with the Rev. Gary Ashley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the graveside.
Mrs. Knowles was born in Angier, NC, to the late Jeff and Mattie Adams. Ruth graduated from Angier High School and immediately contributed to the war effort by helping to make transistors.
Shortly after graduating, she and J. E. Allen were married and worked side by side in their own grocery stores. Upon J. E.’s death, she worked with Sears until her retirement. After missing her customers and friends, she returned to work with Jackson’s Red and White until its closing.
In 1980, Ruth married Shelton M. Knowles of Dunn. They enjoyed thirty-eight years together dancing, the mountains and helping people in need.
Mrs. Knowles is survived by her loving husband, Shelton; son, John E. Allen and wife Elaine; daughter, Debbie A. Oxendine and husband, Larry; granddaughter, Janna Laton and husband Neil; grandson, Jonathan Allen and wife Julie; two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Cooper Laton; two stepchildren, Johnny Knowles and Cathy Johnson; three step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruby Denning and Macie Parrish.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, J. E. Allen and siblings, Glen, Melvin, James, Marvin and Billy.
