Rodney was born January 6, 1956, in Sampson County, to the late Franklin Durd Hunter and Lois Edna Lee Hunter Hawkins. In addition to his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by his stepfather, George J. Hawkins; grandparents, Samuel and Rosa Bell Hunter and Naylor and Eva Lee; mother-in-law, Evelyn Lorraine Boykin; brother-in-law, J.W. Warren; sister-in-law, Brenda Matthis; and grandson, Robert Grant Joyner.

Rodney was a hard worker through and through.  He learned the value of dedication and perseverance at a young age while working at his grandfather’s sawmill–lessons that stayed with him all his life.  He was a vigilant outdoorsman.  In later years, he could often be found tinkering on projects, always fixing, building, or improving things for himself and for friends who knew they could count on him.

Above all else, Rodney loved his family.  He especially cherished his wife of 52 years, Dora Ann, who was the love of his life and his constant companion.  His devotion to his family was steady, loyal, and unwavering.

Rodney had a passion for fast cars and motorcycles and enjoyed the freedom and thrill they brought him.  He also deeply valued his friendships and the time spent with those closest to him.

Known for his generous spirit, Rodney had a giving heart and would truly give you the shirt off his back.  He will be remembered for his kindness, his work ethic, and  the love he shared so freely.

Rodney’s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the memories held by those who loved him.
