Milford E. Carter Obituary

Fayetteville,

Milford Elmer Carter Jr., 99, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully in his home on December 19, 2022. Born May 22nd, 1923, in Wilson, NC. Mr. Carter was the third of seven children born to Milford Elmer Sr. and Beulah Mae Aldridge Carter.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Jessie Brewington Carter, two children, Carlo Bertis Carter and Jacqueline Carter Breeden, two brothers Dewey and Clarence Carter, and two sisters Helen Carter Greenfield and Dorothy Carter Blackmon.

He is survived by his only granddaughter Carla Carter Jacobs; two great-grandsons Jacob Aaron and wife Blair Torres Jacobs, and Jared Alexander Jacobs; two siblings, sister Betty Carter Perkins (Maurice) of Texas and brother Robert Carter (Catharina) of Sweden; a daughter-in-law Mary Jacobs Carter and son-in-law Roger Breeden; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

At the time of his death, Mr. Carter was the oldest living member of the Coharie Tribe. He served honorably in World War II with the 184th MP Company. After retiring from the St. Albans New York Post Office in Jamaica, NY as a letter carrier with more than 25 years of service, Milford and Jessie returned home to North Carolina where they were faithful members of New Bethel Baptist Church in Clinton, NC.

He was a devoted husband, father, and the beloved patriarch of the family who was known for his dry sense of humor. He was an avid bowler, a lifelong fan of the New York Mets, and enjoyed watching all kinds of sports. He will be long remembered as a man of few words, with the patience of Job.

Funeral service will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, December 22nd at New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Chris Webb, Rev. Dennis Newton and Rev. Hubbard Lowery officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery with the Robeson County Honor Guard.   The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
