Madeline Fann Barnes, age 94, of 805 Basstown Road in Clinton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at her cherished home, surrounded by her devoted family. A beloved matriarch and steadfast pillar of her community, Madeline was known for her deep faith, unwavering kindness, and enduring grace. Born on October 3, 1930, in Sampson County to the late Lebron Quincy Fann and Olivia Spell Fann, Madeline spent nearly a century filling the lives of those around her with warmth, wisdom, and love. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she created a legacy built on faith, family, and hospitality. Her home was a place of welcome—filled with home-cooked meals, heartfelt conversations, and joyful laughter. Madeline’s life was firmly rooted in her Christian faith. She was a devoted member of Calvary Tabernacle PFWB Church, where she found purpose in worship and fellowship. A gifted pianist and organist, she played for services over many years and generously gave her time directing various programs for both adults and children. Her commitment to the church was a reflection of her deep spiritual life and desire to serve others. Madeline also had a passion for storytelling—often sharing cherished family history, childhood memories, and lessons that only time and experience can teach. She loved gardening, particularly tending to her azaleas and vegetables, and remained active in the daily operations of the family farm well into her later years. Professionally, Madeline was immensely proud of her 40-year career with the Sampson County Tax Department’s real estate division. She took great satisfaction in helping individuals and businesses navigate the complexities of property tax matters with fairness and diligence. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lester Lee Barnes, and her sisters, Mary Peace Capps and Willa Dean Daughtry. Madeline is survived by her children: • Rebecca Sue Holden, • Gloria Daughtry (Kent), and • Leslie Kent Barnes (Vivian); Her grandchildren: • Brett Knowles, • Candace Mosteller, • Dillon Barnes, and • Lynsey Barnes; And her great-grandchildren: • Holden Mosteller, • Hudson Mosteller, • Kace Knowles, • Reese Knowles, • Meredith Hargett, • Claire Hargett, • Preston Kirkman, and • Hollyn Kirkman. She also leaves behind her loving sisters: • Virginia “Peggy” Lambert and • Frances Annette Cannady (Delmar), Along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and extended family who will continue to carry her memory forward. A funeral service celebrating Madeline’s remarkable life will be held on Sunday, July 13, at 2:30 PM, at Calvary Tabernacle PFWB Church. Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 2:00 PM, prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Virginia, Frances, Annie Daniels, Linda Vann, Linda Daughtry, and the team at 3HC Hospice for their loving care and support during Madeline’s final years.
