Doris Joanne Hollingworth Peterson, formerly of Moltonville Road, Clinton, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at Rolling Ridge Assisted Living.

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, May 3, 2026 at Rowan Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Clay Carter officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the graveside.

Joanne was born on December 3, 1942 in Wayne County to the late S. Lowell Hollingworth and Doris Lee King Hollingsworth.  She was the devoted wife to the late Hubert S. Peterson.  Joanne was a member at Rowan Baptist Church. She began her teaching career at Oxford Orphanage.  After moving back to Sampson County, she began her 34-year teaching career with Sampson County Schools at Hargrove Elementary.

After retirement she and Steve spent many happy times at Oak Island.  She enjoyed freezing and canning from their garden and sharing it as long as her health allowed.  She liked picking blueberries from the bushes they planted together and grapes from the vines they started from her grandparents’ vines.

She spent many hours on her zero-turn mower cutting acres of grass.  She was proud of her catfish she grew in the pond out back and the guinea fowl who loved to visit her in the yard.  Joanne’s true passion was reading every day until she lost her eyesight.

Her surviving family is sister, Sharon H. Pearsall, of Clinton; niece, Robin H. Williford (Joey), of Newton Grove, and nephews Stewart Lowell Hollingsorth (Roxanne) of Fairmont and Samuel Kevin Hollingsworth, sister-in-law, Mary Hollingworth. Great nephew, Charlie Williford, great nieces, Samantha Hollingsworth, Staci H. Brooks (Garrett), Saige Katie Hollingworth and Suzanne Williford along with two great-great nieces, Nora and Lena Brooks.  Mary Paul Sinclair, a dear beloved cousin, is also left to cherish her memory.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents S. Lowell and Doris Hollingsworth, her husband, Hubert S. Peterson, brothers Samuel Lowell and Gary William Hollingsworth and sister-in-law, Jane P. Hollingsworth.

First, thank you to all Joanne’s faithful church family and friends for all your prayers and visits during her time at Rolling Ridge Assisted Living for the care they provided during her four years there.  All of you had a particular role in her life. We appreciate each of you.

Much appreciation to Gentiva Hospice, her doctors, and the entire medical staff along with her nurses, Carol, Jessica and CNA’s Shannon and Pam who provided excellent care.
