Henry James Register, Jr. Obituary

Turkey,

Henry James Register, Jr., 93, of 1935 Wilmington Road, was received by our Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 1, 2025, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. He was also reunited with his wife whom he has loved and longed for the past 7 years.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM, Monday, January 5th at Devotional Gardens in Warsaw with Rev. Jonathan Shattock officiating.  The family will receive friends at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home from 1 PM to 2 PM, on Monday just before the graveside service and at other times at the home of his daughter, Donna Landes, at 601 Woodrow Street, Clinton, NC  28328.

Henry, born April 8, 1932, in Sampson County, was the son of the late Henry James Register, Sr. and Alice Hudson Register.  He spent 22 years in the US Navy Reserves and was an Aviation Crew Chief.  After retiring from the Navy, he moved back to North Carolina to manage the family farm.  While stationed  at Floyd Bennett Field Air Station he was involved in establishing the first Baptist Church in Long Island, NY.   He told the story how the men in the church (all military) were varnishing the floors and somehow caught the church on fire.  Their new pastor from Texas joked about burning the church down before he preached his first sermon.  As a farmer, he loved to plow the fields and watch the crops grow.  He was known for growing big peanuts and had a list of regular customers during the peanut season.  Henry left his farming career and managed Smith Douglass Fertilizer Company in Turkey until he retired.  He then settled on being at home and enjoying time with his wife, Helen.  Henry was a member of Turkey Baptist Church and served as a deacon and on various church committees. He loved to sing and served as the Men’s Choir Director.  Henry, along with his wife, Helen, served on the cooking crew for NC Baptist Men for several years.  Henry loved to help people and was always willing to listen to their stories.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Helen Peterson Register and sisters Thelma Hatchell and Annie Grace Ezzell.

Survivors include: daughter, Donna Kay Register Landes and husband Richard; son, Kenneth James Register; grandchildren, Melinda Kay Lescar (Derek), Carla Landes Carroll (Anthony), and Laura Landes Holland (Steven); great grandchildren, Devon Carroll (Elena), Trey Barksdale and Bentley Holland; great-great grandchildren, Victoria Carroll and A. J. Carroll; and sister, Jean Tyler.

Special thanks for the excellent care and concern for Henry and his family from 3HC and Hospice in Clinton and Kitty Askins Center in Goldsboro.  The compassionate staff resonated God’s love and caring for his people.

Special thanks to Henry’s caregiver, JoAnn Morrisey, who followed him wherever he went and kept him informed about all the western TV shows they watched together.  Henry’s family will always love and cherish her.

Special thanks to Crumpler Honeycutt Funeral Home for the comfort and support for our family during this time.  They provided grace for the family as they begin their journey of grief.
