Elaine (Monk) Allen Obituary

Doris Elaine Allen, 78, of Clinton, NC, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025.

Elaine, born on April 6, 1947, in Dunn, NC, was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many.  She grew up in Newton Grove, NC and graduated from Hobbton High and Kings Business College.  For many years, she resided in Clinton.

Elaine was known for her generosity, strength, faith, and good sense of humor.  She was extraordinarily dedicated to her family and friends, often as a caregiver and supporter in times of need.  She was a loving “Mimi” to her grandchildren and fiercely supported her children’s well-being, education, and interests.

After beginning her career working in the Air Force in Raleigh, NC, she eventually served as a dedicated personnel officer at Sampson Community College, in Clinton, retiring after over 30 years.  Upon retirement, she focused her friendly and competitive spirit into her long-standing search for antiques and collectibles.   Elaine was also an expert in Usher and Monk family history and in working to preserve family stories and artifacts for future generations.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John E. Allen, Jr., who she started dating while at Hobbton High School.  She is also survived by their son, Jonathan E. Allen, and his wife, Julie of Fairfax Station, VA; their daughter, Janna A. Laton, and her husband, Neil and their children, Caroline Allen Laton, 15, and John Cooper Laton, 12, of Fuquay-Varina, NC; her brother, Phil Monk, and his wife, Gayle Monk, of Oak Point, TX; and her sister-in-law, Debbie Oxendine, and her husband, Larry Oxendine, of Spring Hope, NC.

She was preceded in death by her father, Philip Bartholomew Monk and his wife, Pattie Usher Monk.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove, NC at 3:15 pm.
