Dorothy Johnson Carter

Dorothy Johnson Carter of Roanoke, Virginia passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at the age of 85. She moved from Raleigh, North Carolina in 2019 to be closer to her family.

She is predeceased by her parents, Mary Pigford Johnson and Luther Thomas Johnson, Jr., of Harrells, North Carolina. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Dr. Sandra Lynn Carter of Troutville, Virginia, and Mary Cathryn Carter of Roanoke, Virginia. Her unwavering love for her daughters will be cherished by them forever.

Dorothy graduated from Franklin High School and then from Meredith College with a degree in History. Later, she received her certification from the School of Library Science at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and continued her love of reading as she worked with young people.

During the years her daughters attended Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, North Carolina, she worked as a school library media specialist at both the elementary and middle school levels. In 1988 she became the School Library Media Coordinator at Daniels Middle School where she worked for twenty-three years before retiring in 2012. Lifetime friendships fostered at each school remained dear to her throughout her life.

Concerning current circumstances, Dorothy will be laid to rest near her beloved family at the Harrells Cemetery in Harrells, North Carolina privately with her family. A public memorial service will be held when it is safe to do so.

The family extends their gratitude to all who have sustained them with their love and prayers. They also express their appreciation to Visiting Angels, Generation Solutions, and especially Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke for their extraordinary service and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Good Samaritan Hospice at 2408 Electric Road, SW Roanoke, Virginia 24018, in honor of Dorothy.

The family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Virginia, and by Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton, North Carolina.
