Betty H. Hairr passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, at the age of 95. Betty Erleen Hairr was born on May 19, 1929, to Clifton and Myrtle Hairr in Salemburg, North Carolina. Raised on a farm in rural Sampson County began with early mornings and endless jobs with crops and livestock. Betty played girls basketball at Salemburg High School and still to this day, her navy and gold uniform remains in a box. After graduating in 1948, the students of her graduating class had a special bond and remained close throughout their adult lives by always attending their annual class reunions until 2016. A few classmates remain alive today and they continue to stay in touch through cards and phone calls. After graduating, Betty lived beside Shirley and Mac Mackenzie and had loads of fun. She was close friends with Becky Cannady and her sister, June. Becky would become her sister-in-law, and they were very much sisters throughout their lives which was filled with visits to one another’s home and special trips whenever the “boys” would go fishing and to NASCAR races! Betty and Becky were also very close to another special sister-in-law, Oliween and the three of them were thick as thieves as they grew old together. Betty’s husband, “Jr” was one of nine siblings whom Betty regarded as her own family. She was diligent about keeping in touch with her in-laws and never hesitated to place a call to find out how each family member was doing and shared the news with others. Betty met her husband, Lattie “Jr” Hairr, at a ball game and they were married September 4, 1948. Living in Clinton, North Carolina, they made their home in an apartment in “downtown” Clinton where their first son, Ronnie was born. Later they purchased a home on Raleigh Road and had their second son, Kendrick. During their marriage, they enjoyed many weekends in the “travel trailer” with friends at White Lake. They traveled to Hawaii, Spain, Morocco and Italy. Her favorite time on these trips was when they attended a “toga” party in Rome complete with togas made from the sheets from their hotel bed and ivy head wreaths. In 1955, Betty and “Jr” joined Grove Park Baptist Church, where they spent many years involved in programs and Sunday school classes. Betty loved her Sunday School class and remained close with the women, always sending “thinking of you” cards to those sick or unable to attend Sunday school class. Betty served on various committees at Grove Park Baptist Church and her favorite committee was cooking and serving families who had lost loved ones. That committee sure had a system, as the ladies could serve a funeral lunch overnight! Her Sunday school class was involved in providing birthday and holiday gifts to the elderly at the Senior Center in Clinton. She joined a Senior choir late in life and especially enjoyed practices because lunch with the “girls” always followed! In 1956, Betty was a young woman with a full-time job as a USDA FSA compliance program clerk. She worked with many of the farmers in Sampson County mapping out crop acreage to ensure farmers were compliant with federal regulations. Retirement was sweet for Betty after 32 years of service. She enjoyed traveling and being available to spend time with her two grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren. She enjoyed walking each day and when the Clinton Wellness Center opened, she was a charter member and began “working out” on the machines as well as taking yoga and pilates classes. Betty was always “younger” than her age and she enjoyed being around younger people. In 2016, Betty moved to Raleigh to be near her son, Ron and his wife, Cathy, as her health changed. It was sad for Betty to leave such an embedded community filled with friends, grandchildren, church and a home of 64 years. She moved to Magnolia Glen Senior Independent living for over a year and then transitioned to Magnolia Glen Assisted Living for six years. New friends at Magnolia Glen helped Betty make a new home in Raleigh. The constant care, kindness and love from all of the staff at Magnolia Glen enriched Betty’s life. Each staff member was joyful and willing to help in any and every way. Special thanks are to be given to the dining staff who constantly had to wait on Miss Betty and to all of the “girls” on the second floor who assisted her with daily routines. Betty was sincerely fond of all of the staff on the second floor who treated her just as they would their own Mom! After a period of declining health, Betty moved to Brighton Gardens of Raleigh. She received marvelous care from the wonderful staff on the second floor as well as Shae Medical. The hospice staff of 3HC provided a caring and peaceful passing. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Lattie Hairr, Jr; brother, R.C. Hairr and wife, Glenda; sister, Lucinda H. Brewer and husband Joe; In laws: Paul Hairr, Rupert and Ann Hairr, Roger Hairr, Elbert and Gertrude Spell, R.J. and Jean Stewart, Wilbert and Elma Tyndall, Omax and Oliween Hairr and Carl and Becky Hairr. Betty is survived by her son, Ron Hairr and wife, Cathy; son, Kendrick Hairr; grandchildren: Brandon Hairr and wife, Diana, and Lauren West and husband, Joe; great grandchildren, Gavin, Zannah, Kadelyn, Maddox and Barrett; Sister-in-law, Pearl Hairr; and many nieces and nephews. Betty had many friends throughout her life and each held a special place in her heart. It is with joy that she remembered her special friends with endless cards and phone calls.
