Barbara Ann Cooke Cornwell passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024, at SRMC.
Born July 2, 1922 in Asheville, NC, Barbara lived her 101 years of life to the fullest. She was a voracious reader and an avid lover of daily crossword puzzles. She loved her weekly bridge games and the fellowship time with friends. One of her greatest joys was sending greeting cards to family and friends. It was her way of staying connected and showing how much she cared for others.
Barbara moved to Shelby as a young child. Later she attended Woman’s College, now known as UNC Greensboro, for two years. She was a debutante who later married her sweetheart, Tom Cornwell, Jr. “Babs” and Tom were married for 52 years until his death in1994. She remained an active and faithful member of First Methodist Church in Clinton.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Samuel Cornwell, Jr., her granddaughter, Stephanie Hales Brogden, and her son-in-law John Hales.
She is survived by her daughter, Carole Cornwell Hales of Clinton, and son Mike Cornwell (Debbie) of Sunset Beach. Grandchildren include Brad Hales (Diana) of Clinton; Thomas Cornwell and wife of Granby, CT; Melissa Stuckey (John) of Walkertown; and grandson-in-law Reid Brogden of Apex.
Nana’s great grandchildren include Hayden (Lex) Marshburn of Wallace, Caroline Brogden of Chapel Hill, Samuel and Evelyn Brogden of Apex, Ella Cornwell of Castalia, Michael Lewis Cornwell (US Navy), Evan Stuckey of Walkertown, Emily (Eric) Pope of Clinton, and Steven (Kelly) Godwin of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Nana’s pride was knowing that she had five generations living at the same time. Her precious great great grandchildren are Lexi Marshburn of Wallace, Aiden Peterson and Kendall Pope of Clinton, and William Godwin of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Services for Barbara will be held on Monday, April 15, 2024, at First Methodist Church in Clinton, NC. Visitation will be in the church sanctuary at 1 pm followed by the funeral service at 2 pm. Interment will follow at Springvale Cemetery.
