Mrs. Zelma Lou Southerland Butler, 99, of 107 Jefferson St., passed away Wednesday, August 30, at Southwood Nursing and Retirement Center in Clinton. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, September 3, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ray Ammons officiating. Interment will follow in the Clinton City Cemetery. Mrs. Butler born in Sampson Co., was the daughter of the late Spencer A. Southerland and Stella Bradshaw Southerland and was the widow of James Edward Butler. In addition she was preceded in death by two daughters: Carolyn Butler Powell, Marie Butler Jackson, a special son-in-law Charles Lee Jackson, brother Raeford Southerland, sisters Azalene Southerland Wilkerson, and Mildred Southerland Ward. Zelma was a homemaker and cared for children in her home. She was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Clinton. Mrs. Butler is survived by: grandchildren Cindy Jackson Bell, and Lee Edward Jackson, a great-grandchild, Jamie Lee Bell, brother Carl Southerland and wife Alene, sister-in-law Edith Southerland, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, special cousins and lots of friends. The family will receive friends 2-3 P.M. Sunday, one hour prior to the service at First Baptist Church and other times at the home 107 Jefferson St. Clinton.
