Shelton Caulder, Jr., 69, of Clinton, NC, died on Wednesday, October 25. 

 

He was born on November 9, 1947, in Laurinburg, NC to Shelton Caulder, Sr. and Marie Elizabeth Parrish Caulder.  He is preceded in death by his father, Shelton Caulder, Sr.

 

Mr. Caulder graduated from Clinton High School in 1966 after which he attended Sampson Technical Institute (STI), graduating in 1968.  He served as the first class president at STI. 

 

On June 8, 1968, Mr. Caulder enlisted in the United State Coast Guard and was shipped to the USCG TRACEN Cape May, NJ for boot camp.  Upon graduating from boot camp, Seaman Apprentice Caulder reported for duty aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter McCullogh; home ported in Wilmington, NC.  He left the McCullough for Hospital Corpsman School at the US Navy TRACEN Great Lakes, IL.  This school was instrumental in how his Coast Guard career developed.  Mr. Caulder attended many schools, receiving both an Associate Degree and a Bachelors Degree from the George Washington University and a Masters Degree from Central Michigan University.  He also served aboard the USCGC Dependable, Panama City, FL., as an Independent Duty Hospital Corpsman.

 

During his career he received many awards and was promoted through the ranks to Chief Hospital Corpsman and later to Commissioned Warrant Office 04.  Mr. Caulder retired from the US Coast Guard on July 1, 1988, as a Commissioned Warrant Officer, Medical Administration, CW04 (MED).  After retirement from the US Coast Guard, CW04 Caulder continued his career in health care until his death.

 

CW04 Caulder is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol Tew Caulder.  He leaves three children; Christy Cunningham (Will) of Clinton, Charley Caulder (Dawn) of Nashville, TN and Alan Caulder (Amy) of Charlotte, NC.  He also leaves two grandsons; William and Jackson Cunningham, and grand-daughter, Brynley Caulder; sisters, Carolyn Kesterson of FL and Judy Gibson of CA; brother, Mike Caulder of NC; and several nieces and nephews.

 

CW04 Caulder was a proud Coast Guardsman.  He was a loving and proud father, a wonderful Papa, brother, uncle and friend, but most of all he truly loved his wife, Carol, with all his being.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1 P.M., Friday, October 27, 2017 at Rowan Baptist Church, with Reverend Clay Carter officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall and at other times at the home.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.crumpler-honeycutt.com.

 

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Foundation payable to Rowan Baptist Church at 701 Rowan Road, Clinton, NC  28328.
