Prentice Lee Gainey, 74, of 3904 Taylor Bridge Hwy, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 5 P.M., Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Reverend E. C. Mattocks and Reverend Tom McMahon officiating.  Entombment will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.

Prentice, born in 1942 in Sampson County, was the son of the late Marshall Gainey and Mary Gainey.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.   He worked at Lundy’s for twenty years and was the owner of Gainey’s BP Station. 

Survivors include;  his wife of fifty-six years, Rose Gainey; children, Michael Gainey, Jimmy Gainey, Donna Justice (Mike), Steve Gainey and Kim Knowles; grandsons, Garrett Knowles, Kyle Knowles, Ryan Justice, Reid Justice, Taylor Gainey, Tyler Gainey and Kenny Grady; sister, Irene Darden;  special friend and caregiver, Larry Faison, “Eye Ball”; and his buddy, Jake.

The family will receive friends from 7 P.M.- 9  P.M., Saturday, May 6, 2017  at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
