Edna Joyce (Norris) Merritt

Edna J. Merritt, 91, of 186 Reedsford Road, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the William H. Dunlap Center for Caring in Raleigh.

A funeral service will be held at 3 P.M., Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Rowan Baptist Church with Reverend Clay Carter and Reverend Mike Shook officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church from 1 P.M. – 2:45 P.M, Tuesday,  just prior to the service.

Edna born in Sampson County in 1925, was the widow of Walter Clifton Merritt.  Together they were the owners of Merritt Grocery.  She was a member of Rowan Baptist Church and very active in church activities.  Edna enjoyed square dancing, playing bridge and mostly spending time with her family.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher Norris and Nora Norris;   brothers, Keith Norris, Robert Norris, Earl Norris and Bobby Norris; and sister, Mary Jones

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Michelle Segal of Raleigh; son, Walter Michael Merritt of Clinton; grandchildren; Ashley Merritt of Clinton, Cliff Merritt Thornton  of Clinton, and Jordan Segal of Nailsea, England; great-grandchildren, Imogen Segal of Nailsea, England; brothers, Larry Norris of Fayetteville and Donald Norris of Wilmington; and sisters, Dorothy McLellan of Raleigh, McRee Schroeder of Richmond, VA, and Elizabeth Hall of Clinton.
