Pre planning allows one to choose what type of services and merchandise they wish to have upon their death. A pastor, special music or any specific instructions may be left for the survivors to refer to at the time of death.

Types of Preneeds:

• Inflation Proof An inflation proof preneed can be written when a person selects specific goods and services and pays in full at the time of selection. The money paid to the funeral director is then invested into an insurance annuity or trust account. These inflation proof preneeds are designed to earn interest in order to keep up with inflation and funeral home price increases. (Please note: Some items are not guaranteed as the funeral home has no control over these costs: for example, obituary charges, sales taxes, monuments, flowers, and outside services.)
• Standard Contracts A standard contract is issued for persons who do not want to select specific goods and services or do not want to pay the full amount at one time. Some people choose to just set aside a specific amount of money (ex. The average cost of a funeral at today’s prices) and designate it to be used for funeral expenses. Others choose to make monthly payments.
• Irrevocable An Irrevocable Preneed can be used only for funeral expenses. Many times social services require a contract to be Irrevocable in order to qualify for Medicaid. Many preneeds are written as a part of a spend down in order to qualify for Medicaid benefits.
• Revocable A revocable preneed contract may be revoked by the purchaser and any time, with the proper paper work.

Existing insurance policies may be assigned for preneed accounts, but in many cases these policies offer no protection from inflation and the premiums will have to continue to be paid by the insured.
