Margaret Honeycutt Gunter, “Peggy”, 89, of 104 Woodland Drive, passed away Thursday, April 22, at Southwood Nursing Center.
A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M., Monday, April 25, at the First United Methodist Church, 208 Sampson Street, Clinton, NC, with the Reverend T. R. Miller officiating. Interment is to follow in the Clinton City Cemetery.
Margaret “Peggy”, born in 1927 in Wayne County, to the late Lucien Gaston Honeycutt and Hattie Jackson Honeycutt was the Social Services Director in Sampson County as well as a member of First United Methodist Church in Clinton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Scott Gunter and a brother, Lucian Gaston Honeycutt, Jr. She was a 1944 graduate of Clinton High School and a 1948 graduate of East Carolina Teacher’s College. She received a masters degree in social work from the University of NC, Chapel Hill, as well as an Administrative Certificate from the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill. Her list of community activities include; Chairman of the Clinton Recreation Commission, Clinton City School Board Member, Director of local soup kitchen, Coordinator for Volunteers after tornados, Coordinator for Volunteers for Food Distribution, Member of the Clinton-Sampson Library Board, Chairperson for Clinton-Sampson Library Board; and a member of FEMA. Her church activities included; adult choir member, teacher for 2, 3, and 4 year olds, President of the C. Freeman Heath Sunday School Class, Coordinator of the Closet for Needy, Chairman of the Health & Welfare Committee, Administrative Board Member, Delegate N. C. Conference, Council on Ministries, Nominations and Personnel Committee, Adult Coordinator, Missions Committee, Staff-Parish Relations Committee, Certified Stephen Minister, Volunteer Church Office and Volunteer Children’s After School Program. Her honors included; Community Action Council Award, Governor’s Volunteer Award, and the First United Methodist Church Christian Service Award.
Survivors include a son, John L. Gunter and wife Beth of Winston Salem; a daughter Jane Gunter Ranieri and husband Rick of Sanibel, Florida; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Scott Gunter.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the C. Freeman Heath Sunday School Class, 208 Sampson Street, Clinton, NC 28328; The Friedberg Moravian Church Youth, 2178 Friedberg Church Road, Winston Salem, NC 27127; or CROW Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife, 3883 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel, Florida 33957.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 24, from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home, 118 Fayetteville Street, Clinton, NC 28328.
